Die Corona-Maßnahmen haben den VMAs gutgetan

Die diesjährigen MTV Video Music Awards mussten ohne Publikum auskommen – zum Glück, wie sich herausstellen sollte.

Die Glanzzeiten, in denen die VMAs mit der Zuverlässigkeit eines Schweizer Uhrwerks jährlich legendäre Pop-Momente hervorgebracht haben, sind längst vorbei. Zuletzt fiel die Preisverleihung eher dadurch auf, nicht mehr aufzufallen. Dementsprechend niedrig waren die Erwartungen an die diesjährige Show, die unter Einhaltung von Social-Distancing-Auflagen an mehreren Orten in New York und ohne Live-Publikum ausgetragen werden musste.

Für dich ausgesucht

Genau das wurde für die VMAs 2020 zum unverhofften Segen: In den späten Nullerjahren war es zur Gewohnheit geworden, große Auftritte konsequent mit Reaktionen von Promis aus dem Publikum zu unterlegen. Das war vielleicht gut für GIFs und Memes, für die Performances selbst aber eher lästig. Dieses Jahr war MTV gezwungen, auf den Störfaktor zu verzichten und den Fokus stattdessen auf die auftretenden KünstlerInnen zu legen. Zum Glück!

Lady Gaga entführte uns mit einem neunminütigen Medley erstmals nach Chromatica, wo neben diversen Outfits auch Ariana Grande wartete, und ermahnte ZuseherInnen, eine Maske zu tragen, The Weeknd nutzte seine Dankesrede, um auf Gerechtigkeit für Jacob Blake und Breonna Taylor aufmerksam zu machen, BTS erinnerten uns daran, wie eine Boyband aussehen muss und Taylor Swift wurde für ihr Musikvideo zu "The Man" als "Beste Regisseurin" ausgezeichnet. Und Miley Cyrus schaukelte während ihrer Performance gar auf einer Abrissbirne, die diesmal eine Discokugel war – wie in guten alten Zeiten.
